Georgia has joined a growing list of states and municipalities that are turning to satellite technology to track felons.

According to a Jan. 1 Associated Press report, the state launched a pilot program this year, under which 178 paroled felons will be outfitted with GPS-based tracking devices. The program is paid for with a federal grant of $492,150 and $54,683 in state funds, the report said. The report did not mention which company is supplying the GPS tracking equipment for the program.
