While the notion of using GPS technology to track convicted and paroled sex offenders is nothing new here in the United States, it is gaining traction internationally as well.

According to a Dec. 3 article in the New Zealand Herald, the New Zealand Corrections Department will be conducting trials of the tracking technology to test whether it can set off an alarm if a convicted child sex offender enters an exclusion zone such as near a school or playground or where other young people congregate.

The article notes that New Zealand’s topography renders GPS not completely reliable. The article did not name the company supplying the GPS tracking equipment.
