EC Research Commissioner Outlines Goals

By Staff Writer | April 2, 2004

Philippe Busquin, the European Research Commissioner for the European Commission (EC), outlined the importance space applications will have in Europe. He commented to Satellite Today, “Space applications will have a significant impact on the European Union and the lives of its citizens over the next five years. Independent space capabilities in reconnaissance, guidance and communication should give more credibility to the European foreign and security policy. By 2010, Europe should have reinforced its position as world leader on the commercial market in satellites and launchers. Space research should also have spin-offs ranging from medical breakthroughs and super-reliable robots to new construction materials and high-tech household equipment, such as air-filtering and water- sanitizing systems.”

An exclusive in-depth interview with Busquin can be found in the April 5 issue of Satellite News. For more information about subscribing to PBI Media’s satellite newsletters, check out our Web site at www.satellitetoday.com
