The Senate Commerce Committee approved a measure Thursday that would prohibit the holding of an auction for multichannel video distribution and data service (MVDDS) spectrum in the 12 GHz band. Last year, the Federal Communications Commission approved MVDDS use of the 12 GHz band that is allocated to the direct broadcast satellite services over the opposition of the DBS industry. However, the FCC required that the MVDDS spectrum be awarded through auctions. If the Senate measure is enacted, the FCC would be prohibited from holding auctions for that spectrum.
