Paris-based Alcatel Space has signed a 148 million euro ($173 million) contract with KT Corp. [NYSE: KTC] and the Korean Agency for Defense Development to build Koreasat 5 – a civilian and military communications satellite. Alcatel Space, a unit of Alcatel [NYSE: ALA], will supply the satellite, ground control system, as well as launch and early operations support. With 36 transponders in the Ku-band, C-band and SHF band, Koreasat 5 will deliver broadband multimedia and digital TV services, along with telecom services, to operations in the Asia-Pacific region.
