SkyBitz, a Dulles, Va.-based provider of satellite-based communications and tracking services for transportation equipment, has received a contract from Landstar System to provide SkyBitz’s GLS (global locating system) services for trailer tracking.

Jacksonville, Fla.-based Landstar has ordered SkyBitz mobile terminals for retrofit installations and has specified the SkyBitz terminals on some of its new trailers being built and delivered during the first half of this year.

SkyBitz’s GLS is a global, satellite-based tracking and monitoring service that has been launched initially in the North American commercial freight transportation market. The system does not use Global Positioning System to track vehicles, but uses wireless satellite technology that delivers nationwide supply chain visibility, the company explained.
