The Indian Space Research Organization will fire its experimental GSLV-2 launch vehicle on May 8 from the Satish Dhawan Space Center in India. The GSLV project has the objective of giving India launch capability for geosynchronous satellites. The first flight test of the vehicle, GSLV-D1, was conducted successfully on April 18, 2001, when the 1,540 kilogram experimental satellite, GSAT-1, was placed into geosynchronous orbit. The GSLV-2 will place a heavier satellite – the 1,800 kilogram GSAT-2 – into geosynchronous transfer orbit.
