GPS Satellite Shipped To Cape
Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT] has shipped the GPS IIR-10 satellite to the Cape Canaveral, Fla., launch site from its facilities in Valley Forge, Pa. The satellite, scheduled to launch in late July, has performance upgrades including a modernized antenna panel and increased power for GPS receivers.
Eight new-generation GPS IIR spacecraft are on orbit out of a total of 28 satellites.
IIR-10 will mark the third GPS IIR satellite launch this year–GPS IIR-9 was launched last month and GPS IIR-8 was launched in January.
GPS IIR satellites are designed to improve global coverage and increase the overall performance of the GPS constellation. Lockheed Martin has manufactured 21 of these satellites for the U.S. Air Force Space and Missile Systems Center. After IIR-10, 11 more GPS IIRs are in the pipeline.
