M2sat Ltd. and Thuraya Satellite Telecommunication Co. are teaming up to offer mobile broadband services at speeds of 192 Kbps to the international broadcasting industry and other high capacity users in the government and corporate worlds.

Thuraya’s satellite capacity will be combined with M2sat’s mobile broadband platform to offer a new generation of mobile broadband services that will triple current satellite data transmission speed, officials of both companies said. Up to 384 Kbps can be achieved by combining two M2sat terminals in leased channel mode IP connections.

The enhanced mobile data transmission capacity is expected to enable broadcasters to transmit high-speed data in areas where no other telecommunication networks are available. The service also is expected to be a significant boost to developmental, emergency and rescue services, along with other operations conducted by governmental and non-governmental organizations.

Hub Urlings, managing director of M2sat, said Thuraya’s main advantage is that it covers some major international hot spot areas. The mobile broadband services should be of “great value” to many industries in a time when corporate networks span the globe and efficient communication is a prime requirement, he added.

The M2sat services are suitable for broadband applications, such as live video transmission by news broadcasters, video conferencing or wide area networking for government and corporate markets, he said. –Paul Dykewicz
