All India Radio (AIR) started transmissions last month of its digital satellite radio service for the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia, according to local reports. “Though AIR has been running a digital service for Africa on AfriStar since Aug. 15, 2000, this is the first time that its footprint is covering the subcontinent. This became possible only after AIR hired a transponder with 64 Kbps on AsiaStar from WorldSpace on an annual rental basis,” the paper noted. About 25,000 people in India now own digital radios, which are priced between 7,000 and 15,000 rupees, the report stated.
