Discovery Channel is to become the first thematic channel to offer enhanced programming for the UK market, reports our sister publication Inside Digital TV. The enhancements will be made available to Sky Digital’s three million homes through OpenTV software. Initially two programmes will benefit: Fighting Hatred a documentary on the ‘Troubles’ in Northern Ireland and the weekly magazine programme Discovery Today.

In much the same way as has been premiered on Sky Sports, the viewer will see an on-screen icon indicating that additional information is available.

Using the remote control the viewer will obtain a variety of enhancements, including biographies of the interviewees, background information links to the Discovery website and a quiz. Discovery will continue to transmit interactivity during the commercial breaks.
