PanAmSat Corp. [SPOT] said Paraguayan Internet service provider (ISP) Planet Internet tripled its leased capacity aboard PanAmSat’s PAS 3 satellite over the Atlantic Ocean Region. The additional bandwidth will allow the ISP to triple its data rates–from 64 kilobits per second to 192 kbps–and meet increasing customer demand. PanAmSat links Planet Internet’s traffic via a C-band spot beam to a PanAmSat Earth station in Homestead, Fla., where it then is connected with the U.S. Internet backbone. PanAmSat said it is actively marketing its Internet service, SPOTbytes, to ISPs around the world. The company’s next satellite, PAS 6, is scheduled for launch over the AOR this spring.
