Hughes Wins Spanish Lottery, Distance Learning Network Deals

[Satellite Today 07-08-08] Hughes Network Systems LLC was awarded a contract by Spain’s Sistemas Tecnicos de Loterias del Estado S.A. (STL) to provide equipment and support services, Hughes announced July 8.
    HNS Ltd., a Hughes subsidiary, will provide a network operations center, 2,800 broadband satellite routers and maintenance services to STL for five years. STL provides information technology and telecommunications services to the Entidad Público Empresarial Loterías y Apuestas del Estado Español, the Spanish state lottery authority.
    Installation work began in May and the system is scheduled to be ready in the 2009 first quarter, Hughes said.
    Separately, Hughes has been selected as prime contractor by the U.S. Social Security Administration to provide operational support services for its distance learning network
    Under the agreement, issued through the U.S. General Services Administration’s Satcom-2 contract vehicle, the Social Security Administration has outsourced the operation and support of its Interactive Video Tele-training network to Hughes. Hughes will provide life cycle management of the network, including satellite airtime, equipment, maintenance, integration, on-site staffing, and hub operation and maintenance. In addition, Hughes will provide a two-way satellite data network application to support agency continuity of operation requirements.
    The initial task order is valued at $4 million, and the total award is expected to be valued at more than $40 million, Hughes said.
