The Digital Intermediate Frequency Interoperability Consortium (DIFI) has released version 1.3.0 of its interoperability standard, ahead of testing during its upcoming PlugFest in September in Germany.

DIFI explained the key new feature is in-band link establishment. This allows DIFI-compatible devices to negotiate parameters with each other. “This is a significant change, as prior versions had been developed under the assumption that DIFI devices would be configured within a set range of known compatible parameters,” DIFI said.

In addition, the DIFI protocol under version 1.3.0 is able to continuously monitor the status of the link between devices and can automatically recover from errors as operating conditions change. The standard also now includes a dedicated system reference point designed specifically for electronically steered antennas (ESAs).

“This release represents a major step forward for digital ground system interoperability,” said DIFI Chairman Stuart Daughtridge. “With link establishment, we’re making the standard not just more powerful — but smarter and more adaptable to the evolving needs of space-ground communications.”

DIFI was founded in 2021 to advance interoperability in satellite and ground system networks. The group now has more than 60 members. The first version of the standard was released in 2022.
