The 2019 Nominees for Satellite Technology of the Year

This marks the second year of Via Satellite’s Satellite Technology of the Year (STOTY) award. Last year, Intellian Technologies won for its v240MT Tri-Band antenna system. This year’s nominees:

Forsway — Forsway Xtend — A hybrid satellite broadband extension that combines satellite downlink coverage with low-cost terrestrial technologies, boosting downlink capacity in rural areas from less than 1 Mbps to more than 40 Mbps using less than 20% satellite capacity compared to traditional VSAT. Deployed in Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.

Get SAT — Nano SAT-H — One of the world’s first on-the-move Ka-band manpacks at only 3.5kg, designed for ground forces and Class III UAVs requiring continuous BLOS communications. In 2019, won contracts from special forces, government agencies, Honeywell, Inmarsat, and Hughes for the U.S. Coast Guard.

Orbital Insight — Orbital Insight GO — A self-service geospatial analytics platform pulling data from EO constellations, SAR, AIS, GPS, WiFi, and connected car signals into one platform with AI algorithms for pattern of life analysis, change detection, and monitoring. Customers include Airbus and the U.S. Air Force AFWERX.

Satellogic — Dedicated Satellite Constellation — A vertically integrated geospatial analytics company offering DSC programs at $2 million per satellite per year for 1 million sq km, claiming 80x cost-efficiency advantage over traditional players. Signed its first contract in Q3 2019 valued at more than $38 million for the Henan province of China.

Lacuna Space — LoRaWAN Satellite Transmission — Achieved the first scalable direct transmission of a LoRaWAN IoT message over satellite using the same power levels as battery-powered devices, enabling sensors to last for years without recharging in remote regions. Launched its first 6U cubesat in 2019.

ThinKom — Multi-Beam Phased Array Gateway Solution — An “array of arrays” replacing large dish farms, simultaneously tracking multiple LEO, MEO, HEO, and GEO satellites with a visual footprint under 2 meters tall and less than 7 meters diameter. Currently in use on more than 1,400 commercial aircraft installations worldwide. VS
