United Launch Alliance (ULA) is now planning for the first full-scale launch for Amazon Project Kuiper on Monday April 28, at 7 p.m. ET. The mission was set to launch earlier this month on April 9, but was scrubbed due to weather.
The Atlas V launch will be the first full-scale launch of Amazon’s broadband constellation and it will launch 27 satellites to Low-Earth Orbit (LEO). Kuiper will provide internet areas with little to no broadband access. It will be a competitor to SpaceX’s Starlink and the OneWeb constellation.
ULA previously launched two prototype satellites for Amazon, which demonstrated two-way video calls and validated onboard optical inter-satellite links. The prototype satellites have since been de-orbited.
Amazon said it has rolled out improvements over the prototype satellites, including phased array antennas, processors, solar arrays, propulsion systems, and optical inter-satellite links.
Amazon says the company expects to begin delivering services to customers later this year. Amazon faces an FCC deadline to have half of the 3,232-satellite constellation launched by July 2026.
