By Jeffrey Hill | May 2, 2012

[Satellite TODAY 05-02-12] Canadian space and satellite technology company MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates (MDA) has been contracted by Sierra Nevada Corp. to develop concepts for a communications solution that will be used on a commercial space shuttle replacement, the companies confirmed May 1.

The engineering concept will be part of the ongoing phase of NASA’s Commercial Crew Development program. The NASA program aims to develop a reusable spacecraft to transport crew and critical cargo to the International Space Station and then return to Earth.
“If successful, this work could form the basis for an operational communications solution to be incorporated into the future reusable crew transportation spacecraft,” MDA said in a company statement.
Financial details of the award were not disclosed.
