[Satellite TODAY 05-12-11] VSAT service provider Afcom Satellite Network (Afcomsat) has deployed a dual-mode satellite/terrestrial system on a fleet of emergency response vehicles (ERVs) in Nigeria, the company announced May 11.
The Afcomsat system is equipped with VSAT hardware technology enabling full IP connectivity to the company’s network and will be integrated into Motorola’s Tetra mobile system and deployed for a major multinational oil company.
The Afcomsat Ku-band VSAT terminal on the ERV includes a 1.2-meter iNetVu auto-pointing antenna from C-Com, which is mounted on a vehicle connected to an STM modem. Special features designed into the Afcomsat system were tailored to provide communication links in rain-fade situations commonly faced in the Nigerian Delta region, Afcomsat said.
“The dual mode system enables communication with the company’s field hand held radios, which turns the ERV into a command post. Streaming live broadcast quality video can now be sent from the ERV and data files can be exchanged with the oil company network. All services can be deployed within a few minutes of arriving at a site and without the need for technical support,” Afcomsat CCO Afolabi Mabogunje said in a statement.
