Riverbed Acquires Former Satellite WAN Optimization Partner

[Satellite TODAY 11-11-10] Riverbed Technology has acquired government satellite network optimization specialist Global Protocols, Riverbed announced Nov. 10.
Riverbed will integrate its WAN optimization products with Global Protocols’ SkipWare technologies for Space Communications Protocol Standards (SCPS) to bolster its position in the optimization market. SCPS is a protocol solution developed by NASA and U.S. Space Command to help military and other organizations that operate in satellite networking environments overcome severe performance degradation and interference caused by weather.
The acquisition also will open up the defense and government markets to Riverbed as an information technology performance solution provider. Before the acquisition, Riverbed and Global Protocols worked together under a deal to provide high-performance, secure access to joint customers in 2008.
“Riverbed has been successful working with government organizations to speed access to mission-critical data over the WAN. By partnering with Global Protocols in 2008, we extended our reach and deepened our investment in the federal market. Adding Global Protocols’ technology to our product portfolio as a result of this acquisition will enable customers to derive even greater value out of the combined solution,” Riverbed CEO Jerry Kennelly said in a statement.
Financial details of the acquisition were not disclosed.
