United Space Alliance to Lay Off 15 Percent of Space Shuttle Workforce

      [Satellite TODAY 07-08-10] United Space Alliance (USA) will layoff about 15 percent of its 8,100-employee space shuttle workforce, effective Oct. 1, the company announced July 7.
          USA said the layoffs were necessary in to align its workforce level with the company’s space shuttle program operations contract work scope and current budget. Two space shuttle missions remain — STS-133 currently scheduled for no earlier than Nov. 1 and STS-134 set for Feb. 26.
          “The reduction in force will affect multiple disciplines and multiple organizations across the company. It is expected to impact about 800 to 1,000 employees in Florida, about 300 to 400 employees in Texas and about 10 in Alabama,” the company said in a statement.
