[Satellite TODAY 11-11-09] NexGen Communications, a partner of Iridium, was awarded a $9.7 million contract from the U.S. Department of Defense to supply 1,450 distributed tactical communication systems radio-only (DTCS-RO) devices to the U.S. military, the Pentagon announced Nov. 9.
The devices, which are branded as Netted Iridium and priced at $6,700 per unit, aim to provide handheld and beyond line-of-sight command and control systems for tactical military operations.
Iridium’s DTCS-RO program started with a $22 million military development contract win in June. The program is part of a group of Iridium development projects underway with the U.S. military. The MSS company also is developing the iGPS for the U.S. Air Force and the communications at speed and depth program for the U.S. Navy.
