Spacecoin, the space startup working to build a decentralized satellite network has signed agreements to pilot satellite internet demonstrations in Kenya, Nigeria, Indonesia, and Cambodia.
Spacecoin previously transmitted a blockchain transaction from space and launched three satellites this past November to test decentralized, permissionless internet service.
On Wednesday, the company announced connectivity pilots in four countries. In each case, Spacecoin will provide the core technology and satellite infrastructure, and work with local partners to oversee ground operations and provide local user support.
The company says it has secured a transmission license with the Communications Authority of Kenya to deliver satellite IoT monitoring solutions and expand connectivity in underconnected regions. Spacecoin is also building upon its existing license from the Nigerian Communications Commission for its initiative to bring high-speed, low-cost connectivity to rural communities.
In Cambodia, Spacecoin has a strategic partnership with local internet service provider MekongNet to extend market reach by providing satellite internet to rural and underserved populations. The company is also working with local partners and government agencies in Indonesia to deliver internet access.
“Regulatory bodies in key regions are recognizing that decentralized satellite technology can deliver the scalability and affordability traditional infrastructure can’t,” Spacecoin founder Tae Oh commented. “These agreements confirm that Spacecoin has moved beyond being just an idea, but a real movement with momentum that will unlock permissionless connectivity through open-sourced satellite technology, powered by people and built for people.”
