[Satellite TODAY 05-21-12] International Launch Services (ILS) has successfully launched the Nimiq 6 direct broadcast satellite for Canadian FSS operator Telesat on a Proton Breeze M rocket from the Baikonur Space Center in Kazakhstan, Telesat confirmed May 18.

The satellite will be placed at the 91.1 degrees West orbital slot to provide a broad range of video services across Canada. Nimiq 6 was built by Space Systems/Loral (SS/L) to carry 32 high-powered Ku-band transponders that are fully contracted to Canadian DTH broadcaster Bell TV for 15 years.
“The state-of-the-art capabilities of Nimiq 6 reflect Telesat’s commitment to bring the most advanced satellite services to our customers,” Telesat President and CEO Dan Goldberg said in a statement. “Nimiq 6 will contribute to Telesat’s revenue and EBITDA in 2012 and for years to come.”
Nimiq 6 will enter into commercial service after it has successfully completed orbit raising and comprehensive in-orbit testing.
