[Satellite TODAY 04-04-12] North American satellite and space company MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates (MDA) has signed a contract with an unnamed customer to provide multiple advanced technology solutions for a telecommunications satellite, MDA announced April 3.

The company said the deal is valued at $12.5 million.
Separately, MDA announced that it is likely to cut its staffing levels after financial uncertainty arose surrounding the future of the federal Radarsat Constellation Mission.
“We are accelerating steps to restructure our workforce,” MDA said in a company statement after a preliminary assessment of the latest federal budget was released last Thursday. MDA suggested that the funding needed to continue the current Radarsat mission plans was not available in the budget.
MDA was awarded a contract by the Canadian Space Agency to carry out the conceptual design work for the Radarsat Constellation Mission in 2006. The company said it expects to meet with government officials in the coming weeks to clarify the mission’s future.
Radarsat launches are currently planned for 2014 and 2015.
