[Satellite TODAY 10-24-11] ETSI has published a new specification that explores the technical challenges for satellite networks to provide inter-working and interoperability with standard terrestrial label-switching routers, the organization announced Oct. 21.
Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) is widely employed as a solution for delivering quality-of-service on IP-based networks by providing IP traffic routing and other advanced capabilities. Compatibility between satellite networks and terrestrial networks is an essential feature of MPLS solutions. ETSI’s new specification defines functional adaptations to enable satellite networks to support MPLS in a standardized manner.
ESTI Vice-Chairman Rupert Goodings said the organization completed the publication with the support of the European Commission and the European Free Trade Association. “Guaranteed quality-of-service remains a major challenge for satellite network operators, and this specification is the latest in a series of ETSI specifications which focus on this challenge.    This new work on MPLS is an important addition to the earlier published QoS specifications by defining a standardized framework that can be used to plan new satellite MPLS deployments,” Goodings said in a statement.
