[Satellite TODAY 04-02-11] Taiwanese operator Chunghwa Telecom will launch a new satellite in mid-May to replace its aging ST-1 spacecraft currently in orbit, the company announced April 1.
The ST-2 satellite, built by Japan’s Mitsubishi Electric Corp., will replace ST-1 when it retires at the end of this year after completing 13 years of service. The operator will use ST-2 to offer Taiwanese customers wider coverage in Asia and the Middle East.
Mitsubishi has shipped ST-2 to Arianespace’s French Guiana launch facility in preparation for its launch on a dual-payload Arianespace Ariane 5 rocket with the GSAT-8 satellite.
