[Satellite TODAY 11-16-10] International Launch Services (ILS) lofted the SkyTerra 1 satellite into orbit Nov. 15 for LightSquared, the companies announced. This was the 7th commercial mission of 2010 for ILS
The ILS Proton Breeze M was launched from Baikonur Cosmodrome at 11:29 p.m. local time and released the SkyTerra 1 satellite into geostationary transfer orbit more than 9 hours later.
SkyTerra 1, to be located at 101.3 degrees West, was manufactured by Boeing and features a 22-meter L-band reflector-based antenna. The satellite will serve as part of LightSquared’s 4G-LTE network that will provide coverage of the United States.
