[Satellite TODAY 11-26-09] Gilat Satellite Networks has been contracted by Telefonica del Peru to provide its SkyEdge 2 broadband satellite communications network to cover more than 3,500 rural sites in Peru, Gilat announced Nov. 25.
    The SkyEdge 2 VSAT network will deliver broadband Internet services such as email, Web, streaming video content, e-commerce, and research related to health care, education and housing as part of Telefonica del Peru’s universal service obligation. The network will also provide telephony to rural populations with optimized voice-over-IP.
    Gilat said deployment of the network is already underway. Financial details of the contract were not disclosed.
