[Satellite TODAY 11-25-09] Spacecom Satellite Communications signed an agreement to provide satellite communications services to an unnamed customer in Africa via the Amos 5i satellite, Spacecom announced Nov. 24.
The company estimates revenue from the Amos 5i contract at $6.3 million until the Amos 5 satellite begins service in mid-2011. After Amos 5 is activated, Spacecom can expand its contracted services up to a maximum value of $7.6 million. The deal also gives the customer the right to notify Spacecom if it wishes to use only two-thirds of the Amos 5i’s services by June 15 — a scenario that would reduce Spacecom’s revenue from the satellite by one-third.
Spacecom purchased the exclusive rights to Amos 5i in September. The satellite, which aims to provide Pan-African C-band and regional Ku-band coverage from 17 degrees East, is scheduled to launch and begin operations in the 2010 first quarter.
