[Satellite TODAY 09-16-09] China Unicom is deploying the SkyAbis cellular backhaul solution from Gilat to enhance GSM mobile connectivity in China’s Xinjiang region, Gilat announced Sept. 15.
The deployment of SkyAbis, a prepackaged solution for cellular backhaul based on the Gilat SkyEdge and SkyEdge 2 multi-service platforms, will work to enable China Unicom’s expansion of GSM services to regions where it was previously not cost-effective to enter. SkyAbis features traffic optimization and dynamic bandwidth allocation for GSM, CDMA 2000 and UMTS backhaul.
China Unicom initially deployed a Gilat VSAT network in 2005 to provide rural communications applications nationwide.
“When compared with competing solutions, SkyAbis will enable us to conserve bandwidth. This will help us provide the most economical service to our customers,” said China Unicom Vice President Shen WenCui, in a statement.
