[Satellite TODAY 08-21-09] Fixed Satellite Services (FSS) fleet operator Intelsat Ltd. has been in business for 45 years, the company announced Aug. 20.
    Intelsat, operating as an Intergovernmental Organization, launched its first satellite, Intelsat 1 or Early Bird, into geostationary orbit above the Atlantic Ocean April 6, 1965.
    In April 1998 Intelsat created a private Dutch entity, New Skies Satellites, with five of Intelsat’s satellites.
    Intelsat became a private company in July 2001 and acquired PanAmSat in July 2006. The company now operates more than 50 communication satellites worldwide.
