[Satellite TODAY 08-18-09] Lockheed Martin Space Systems will lay off 800 workers by the end of 2009 in efforts to improve its competitive posture, the company announced Aug. 17.
The reductions, which represent about 4.5 percent of the company’s overall workforce, will focus primarily on the Denver, and Sunnyvale, Calif., facilities and will impact all levels and disciplines, including technical, managerial and administrative positions. The company is offering a voluntary layoff plan for these facilities.
“Space Systems is a sound enterprise with technical breadth and unmatched capabilities. We will remain relentlessly focused on operational excellence and mission success as we position ourselves for the future,” Joanne Maguire, executive vice president of Lockheed Martin Space Systems, said in a statement.
In a separate action, Lockheed Martin is downsizing at its Michoud operations as a result of the planned termination of the Space Shuttle program in 2010.
