[Satellite Today 06-04-09] DirecTV President and CEO Chase Carey is resigning from the company, effective July 1, to accept a new position at News Corp. DirecTV announced June 3.
DirecTV said it has formed a committee of directors to search for Carey’s replacement. Executive Vice President Larry Hunter has been appointed as acting CEO in the interim.
Under Carey, DirecTV’s subscriber count grew from 12 million to more than 18 million customers in the United States. In 2004, Carey saw DirecTV’s Latin America business emerge from bankruptcy to grow from 1.5 million to 5.8 million subscribers, becoming the largest pay-TV operator in Latin America.
