[Satellite Today 09-18-09] Inmarsat will increase the streaming data speeds on its Broadband Global Area Network (BGAN) service because of demands from the media sector, Inmarsat announced Sept. 17.
The enhancement, which is in development and expected to be introduced by the middle of 2009, will deliver a minimum guaranteed streaming rate of 384 kilobits per second (kbps). The premium streaming service will be available on existing BGAN terminals capable of accessing current streaming rates of 256 kbps and will be accessible without the need for additional external hardware.
The increased speed will offer near-broadcast quality video, Inmarsat said.
