SES subsidiary MX1 is bundling satellite and LTE technology to offer a broadcast solution that aims to distribute HD and Ultra HD video and social media content to mobile smartphone applications. MX1 partnered with German video distribution solutions provider Smart Mobile Labs (SML) to create the new service.

SML will contribute 5G-ready LTE/Wi-Fi hotspot technology, as well as its Edge Video Orchestrator (EVO) LTE solution, which allows switching of real-time video streams with low latency. MX1 will provide 150 Mbps of SES satellite bandwidth and its OU Flex solution. Launched in March 2018,  OU Flex provides a video distribution and bidirectional IP connectivity solution for broadcasters, live event producers, event organizers and remote operators.  The partners said the new integrated OU Flex solution will work despite terrestrial and mobile network congestion, as well as in remote areas to ensure simultaneous OTT streaming, social media update activity and live video feed distribution.

“We enhanced the audience experience at a major baseball game with our EVO technology by enabling spectators to use their smartphones or tablets to choose the camera angle from which they’d like to view the game — whether from the pitcher’s, catcher’s, or cheerleader’s point of view,” said SML CEO Andreas Westhoff. “By combining our solution into MX1’s OU Flex, we can go further because of satellite’s reliability and reach. Now we will be able to deliver our unique capabilities to customers in remote locations or in network congested situations.”
