[Via Satellite 07-11-2014] Skybox Imaging has obtained the first images from its recently launched SkySat 2 Earth observation (EO) satellite. The satellite is the company’s second spacecraft, launched July 8, 2014 aboard a Soyuz rocket.

The first images taken show Bangor, Maine and Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Skybox Imaging has progressed through the initial commissioning activities, but the company said tuning and calibration for SkySat 2 is expected to take several months. These first images, taken within 48 hours of launch, are not tuned or calibrated.

Skybox Imaging, which was recently purchased by Google, contracted SSL to build a constellation of EO satellites which the company uses for high-resolution imagery, HD video and analytics. The Skybox team engraved their signatures on the inside panel of SkySat 2 before sending it to orbit.
