[Via Satellite 09-11-2014] Japan-based Sky Perfect JSAT has selected SpaceX to launch the in-orbit backup satellite JCSAT 16. The launch is scheduled for the first half of 2016.

Sky Perfect JSAT is also launching JCSAT 14 with SpaceX in 2015. The company chose SSL to build both satellites on the SSL 1300 satellite bus. JCSAT 14 carries C- and Ku-band transponders, and is intended to replace JCSAT 2A at 154 degrees east. JCSAT 16 will carry Ku- and Ka-band payloads with a primary focus on covering Japan.

Sky Perfect JSAT has also signed contracts with Arianespace to launch JCSAT 15 in 2016 on an Ariane 5, and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries to launch a satellite in fiscal 2016 on an H2A rocket.
