BSkyB Loses Grip On Premier League Broadcast Rights
England’s FA Premier League split the broadcasting rights for its game between BSkyB and Setanta Sports, the league and broadcasters announced May 5. BSkyB, which had its monopoly broadcast rights broken by the European Commission in November, lost more of the rights than it had expected.
The satellite broadcaster had expected to retain five of the six packages for broadcast rights but now holds only four of the six packages. The deals, which run from 2007 through 2010, give BSkyB 92 of the lives matches while Setanta has rights to 46 games per year.
BSkyB will pay 1.3 billion British pounds ($2.4 billion) for its games. BSkyB won the previous rights to the Premier League in August 2003, paying a little more than 1 billion pounds ($1.8 billion) for a three-year exclusive.
