Country music radio station Mean Country has also recently launched and can be found in the EPG at Ch.923. as expected The Racing Channel closed on January 31 due to increasing competition. Channel U, which promises ‘sexy and erotic’ music videos overnight, has launched on 12285 MHz vertical, SR 27500, FEC 2/3, VPID 2312, APID 2313. SkyTravel Shop is new on 12304 MHz horizontal, Ch.668 offering holiday deals from all the major tour operators. UK based travel agents/tour operators First Choice are to launch their own TV channel under the guise of MyTravel TV. The channel has not entered the Sky EPG yet but it is testing on 10921 MHz vertical, ID:’5008′. Solar Radio, at Ch.879, has had to cut back to mono mode due to increasing carriage costs on the Sky Digital platform. Sky have decided to rename their new music channels, Axe, Pop and Amp to Scuzz, Gloss and The Amp. Scuzz will be rock based whilst Gloss will be mostly pop and The Amp will be more for the slightly older generation. Recent newcomer Radio Caroline has not had a trouble free launch. Within days of launch this caption appeared on the channel’s slot, ‘There Is A Technical Fault With This Channel’. The Radio Caroline website carried a more detailed explanation with…’ We apologise for this break, which is beyond our control and seems to be due to technical problems between our friends at World Radio Network and the uplinking site. However we know that WRN are working even as we speak to correct the difficulty. We do not know if the problem will be remedied in hours or whether this may take a little longer. When returning to ‘ Sky ‘ we may have yet another new frequency, so we would ask you all to regularly check this site and our news line for details.’ When the station does return it is likely that they will shift frequency from 11623 MHz horizontal to 11585 MHz horizontal. The latest offering from the BBC, BBC Three, launched on 9 February and occupies 11720 MHz horizontal, Ch.160. BBC Three is a replacement for BBC Choice. TRN International has vacated 12226 MHz horizontal.

The tiny emirate of Ras Al Khaimah, the most northerly of the United Arab Emirates, is to launch two satellite channels later this year. One will be general entertainment and will be named the Ras Al Khaimah Satellite Channel while the other will focus on educational issues and will operate under the name Julphar Satellite Channel. Although no carriage deal has been announced as yet the channels are likely to appear on either Arabsat or Nilesat. There are four new channels on 12620 MHz vertical, SR 27500, FEC 3/4. They are TV5 Orient – V2060, A2020; KTV 3/KTV 4 (Kuwait) – V2160, A2120 and EuroNews – V2660, A2620.

A Radio Bahrain General Programme has left the 7.00 MHz audio sub-carrier on the back of MBC 2 at 3823 MHz LHCP. Bahrain FM and Radio Bahrain are still present here on the 7.40/7.80 MHz sub-carriers.

CNNI Europe is occasionally in the clear on 12595 MHz vertical, SR 27500, FEC 3/4, VPID 168, APID 112. In the Russian NTV+ multiplex at 11938 MHz horizontal, SR 27500, FEC 3/4 both NTV+ Nashe Kino (National Cinema) and NTV+ Detski Mir were free-to-air for some time last week. From Italy, Grande Fratello Finestra (Big Brother Window) 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5 have launched on 11977 MHz horizontal, SR 27500, FEC 3/4, VPIDs 522/523/524/525/526, APIDs 750/751/752/753/754. All are encoded. The PIDs for Deutsche Welle TV Arabic on 11143 MHz vertical, SR 5500, FEC 7/8 have changed to V1000, A1001. MTV Classic and TMF UK are new in the Viacom package on 11242 MHz vertical, SR 27500, FEC 3/4, VPIDs 161/162, APIDs 84/88. Both channels are encoded in Cryptoworks. Also in this bouquet, MTV Polska has changed PIDs to V163, A92. A Pilot 1 testcard has appeared in clear MPEG-2 on 11408 MHz vertical, SR 27500, FEC 3/4, VPID 518, APID 519.EuroSport News has joined the Greek package at 11823 MHz horizontal, SR 27500, FEC 3/4, VPID 519, APID 720. The computer and games console games channel Game One has left 12380 MHz vertical for 11034 MHz vertical, SR 27500, FEC 3/4, VPID 320, APID 330. The recently launched Arabian Star Broadcasting (ASB), which opposes the Saddam Hussein regime in Iraq appears to be uplinked from Spain by Telefonica Servicios Audiovisuales of Madrid. The channel claims to have studios and post production facilities in London and uses Hotbird capacity (12092 MHz horizontal) as well as NSS 806 at 40.5 degrees West. To arrive at NSS 806 the channel is uplinked from Miami by GlobeCast America. It is thought that the Spanish earth station uses the NSS 806 feed to turnaround onto Hotbird.

A Radio Maria Italia can be heard on the 7.74 MHz audio sub-carrier on the back of RAI Tre at 11532 MHz vertical.
