Should Autonomous Cars Share the Wheel with Humans?

Some research has shown that autonomous cars lacking a steering wheel or brakes may in fact be safer than a vehicle in which human drivers can take manual control. Should car companies follow Google’s approach and remove the human element entirely, or is a more gradual approach most appropriate to bring this technology into the mainstream?
