Golbriak Space, an Estonian space laser communications company, has raised 4 million euro ($4.5 million) in seed funding. This was co-led by Join Capital and PhontonVentures with participation from Takeoff Accelerator. The company announced the new funding, Oct. 8
This investment marks an important milestone as the company moves towards serial production of its laser communication terminals and expand its manufacturing capacity to meet growing commercial demand. The company reports it has functioning products, paying customers, and advanced commercial discussions involving several thousand terminals, and its focus is now on bringing optical communications to constellation scale.
The company designed the Ermes laser terminal for space and the Ares laser terminal for airborne missions.
“Closing this round marks a turning point for Golbriak. Years of research, specialised engineering and customer validation have gone into solving the practical challenges that determine whether laser communications can operate reliably at scale. Our priority now is to serve that demand reliably and at volume,” Nicola Garzaniti, founder and CEO of Golbriak Space, said in a statement.
