NASA’s first PhoneSats successfully beamed their first images from space. The satellites, launched on April 21 on board an Orbital Science’s Antares rocket, were all built around a standard cubesat frame about four inches square and use smartphones to snap pictures of the Earth and act as the spacecrafts’ avionics for maintaining attitude control.

This week the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is scheduled to consider a proposal by Qualcomm, which suggests the use of the 14.0-14.5GHz spectrum band (already used by satellites) to beam Internet signals up to airplanes from 150 ground stations.
