Via Satellite presents six nominees for the 2022 Satellite Technology of the Year award, to be announced at the awards luncheon on March 15 at SATELLITE 2023.
Apple iPhone 14 with Emergency Satellite Messaging — Apple brought life-saving emergency text messaging to the world’s most popular smartphone via Globalstar’s satellite network. Custom components and algorithms allow iPhone 14 antennas to connect to satellite frequencies. Apple invested $450 million from its Advanced Manufacturing Fund in support. The service already saved its first life and generated widespread global media coverage.
Astrocast Satellite IoT Solution — A bidirectional satellite IoT solution using 14 nanosatellites in LEO, sun-synchronous, and equatorial orbits. The bidirectional capability enables commands to assets — not just data collection — opening new use cases. Signed a multi-million dollar contract with ArrowSpot for global high-value cargo tracking.
Atlas Space Operations “Freedom” Ground-Software-as-a-Service — A cloud-native GSaaS platform leveraging 1 billion+ data points to automate satellite pass planning and communications, compatible with any ground site hardware. Has completed 52,000 passes for NOAA with 98%+ availability and sub-26-second latency.
Lynk Satellite Direct-to-Cell Service — Solved the doppler shift problem to make satellites appear to cell phones as standard terrestrial towers, enabling 3GPP-compliant two-way connections to unmodified Android and iPhone devices. Targeting up to 4 billion potential customers; commercial agreements in 41 countries.
Maxar Technologies Satellite Imagery — Maxar’s satellites provided daily time-stamped imagery of the Russian military buildup and invasion of Ukraine, underpinning global news coverage and verifying war crimes allegations in Bucha. Credited by Ukrainian defense forces as their most valuable tool.
Speedcast “TrueBeam” Intelligent Automation Solution — A network optimization algorithm that re-evaluates network loading hourly, combining smart beam-switching and SD-WAN traffic-steering for seamless maritime connectivity across satellite beams, handling rain fade, line-of-sight blockage, and itinerary changes. TDMA platform-agnostic. VS
