Ariane 5 Lofts ProtoStar I And BADR-6 Satellites Into Orbit
An Ariane 5 heavy lift rocket lifted off from the European Spaceport in French Guiana, South America, and carried two satellites — ProtoStar I and BADR-6 — into orbit, Arianespace announced.
The rocket shouldered a hefty payload on the mission totaling 19,050 pounds (8,639 kilograms), which included more than 16,600 pounds (7,530 kg) for ProtoStar I and BADR-6, along with their integration hardware and the SYLDA 5 multiple satellite dispenser system.
ProtoStar I is the first satellite for a new operator: Asia’s ProtoStar telecommunciations service provider. Built by Space Systems/Loral with the 1300 spacecraft bus, ProtoStar I will provide relay capacity over Asia for direct-to-home (DTH) television broadcasting, as well as broadband communication requirements across the region.
This 40th flight of an Ariane 5 is part of the seven missions planned by Arianespace in 2008.
The ProtoStar I satellite was the 33rd Space Systems/Loral-built payload orbited by Arianespace, and it carries 16 Ku-band and 32 C-band transponders for operation from an orbital position of 98.5 deg. East.
General Dynamics Ships GeoEye-1 Satellite To Vandenberg For Launch
General Dynamics Corp. [GD] shipped the GeoEye-1 Earth imaging satellite to Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif., for launch Aug. 22.
General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems, Gilbert, Ariz., shipped the satellite, which will be operated by GeoEye Inc. of Dulles, Va.
GeoEye provides satellite imagery suitable for both military and civilian users.
General Dynamics was responsible for the mission-system engineering, design and manufacture of the spacecraft; procurement and integration of the camera and optical telescope assembly; and environmental testing of the integrated satellite. General Dynamics also will conduct launch processing and on-orbit checkout.
GeoEye-1 is part of the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) NextView program. The NextView program is designed to ensure that the NGA has access to commercial imagery in support of its mission to provide timely, relevant and accurate geospatial intelligence in support of national security.
