[Via Satellite 07-15-2014] Arabsat has entered a strategic commercial agreement with Asia Broadcast Satellite (ABS) for the lifetime use of a multi-Ku-band transponder payload on ABS 3A. ABS plans to launch the satellite, carrying a total of up to 48 Ku- and C-band transponders, either late this year or early next year.

For ABS, the deal is significant because the company has never been able to completely cover the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. Arabsat, which placed four Requests for Proposals (RFPs) out for new satellites, said the agreement will help the company keep pace with rapidly growing regional demand.

ABS has purchased two all electric Boeing 702SP satellites, ABS 3A and ABS 2A, to grow its fleet. The company plans to locate the ABS 3A satellite at 3 degrees West, where it will provide services to the Americas, Europe and the MENA region. ABS has contracted SpaceX to launch both satellites on Falcon 9 rockets.
