Smart Metering to Account for More than 40 Percent of M2M Growth

By Jeffrey Hill | July 28, 2011
[Satellite TODAY 07-28-11] Smart metering will account for more than 40 percent of the $400 million M2M connected devices market by 2016, according to a Juniper Research report issued July 27.
The report said that the increasing volume of smart meter deployments could create a significant additional M2M revenue stream for service providers as annual revenues from M2M services are projected exceed $35 billion by 2016.
“Organizations upholding a direct relationship with the end-customer will benefit most from this new market. Services that offer to both enable and to manage connectivity will be the main winners, rather than those that offer only connectivity. Developed markets, particularly the United States, are leading both in terms of deployment and awareness. The remote healthcare industry also offers significant long-term promise for M2M, though deployment will be limited over the next five years,” Juniper Research Analyst Anthony Cox said in the report.
