Ericsson Deploys Satellite Phones to Support Japanese Recovery Efforts

By Jeffrey Hill | March 25, 2011

[Satellite TODAY 03-25-11] Telecom equipment manufacturer Ericsson will supply satellite phones and solar-powered towers to the Japanese government to support the country’s earthquake and tsunami recovery efforts, the company announced March 24.
The solar power towers will be used to provide back up for Japan’s damaged communication infrastructure, Ericsson’s Senior Vice President of CDMA Mobile Systems Rima Qureshi said in a statement.
“The damages from the earthquake could total 235 billion and the reconstruction efforts could take five years. We have offered to provide satellite phones for fast communication, as it is the major problem as of now in that country. Ericsson is ready to help Japan in whichever way possible,” Qureshi said.
