CETel Managing Director Explains SeaMobile Acquisition
[Satellite TODAY Insider 02-09-11] German teleport and satellite service provider Central European Telecom Services (CETel) will acquire SeaMobile Europe in an effort to leverage its strong presence in Africa and other international markets, CETel Managing Director Martin Terlunen told Satellite TODAY Insider.
“The goal of the acquisition of SeaMobile Europe by CETel is to add complementary satellite services to the existing portfolio of CETel and to enter into the maritime and mobile services market. Furthermore, the aim is to broaden the coverage and to strengthen CETel’s position in Middle East and Africa marketplace, and reach further into the French speaking market,” Terlunen said.
The deal, expected to close next month, will see CETel expand its service portfolio and customer base, consolidating its market position in the mobile and maritime business. SeaMobile, a supplier of satellite-based communications services, will help CETel expand its clientele to include NGOs, government institutions, oil and gas, and mining companies.
Terlunen said the biggest prize awarded from the acquisition is a boost in revenues driven by a larger presence in both the Middle East and Africa. “Currently the revenue from the Middle East and African market is about 40 percent, and as a result of this major deal it will be increasing by 20 percent. As a result of this deal, CETel will expand its service portfolio by offering advanced TDMA and MMS services in order to significantly increase the customer base and to provide service in 75-80 percent of all African countries.”
However, Terlunen admits that the acquisition also brings challenges for the company this year. “The complete migration of the SeaMobile Europe services and personnel to form a key provider in the satellite industry and to strengthen its position as a global player in the satellite communications market will be our greatest challenge in 2011.”
