[Satellite Today – 1-31-08] Hughes Network Systems LLC has signed Embarq to be a licensed reseller of HughesNet broadband satellite Internet access, Hughes announced Jan. 31.
HughesNet offers service packages with download speeds from 700 kilobits per secondto 2 megabits per second via a compact satellite modem connected to a small outdoor antenna at the customer site, enabling high speed communication from PCs and laptops with geostationary satellites positioned in space. The satellites in turn communicate with the Hughes Network Operations Center, which manages Internet access and retrieval of information, and provides rapid response back to subscribers.
"Selling HughesNet high-speed Internet service to the small business owner is the latest initiative to highlight our commitment to this market segment," said Susan Sarna, vice president of marketing and product management for Embarq in a statement. "This service will help businesses in rural communities increase productivity by giving their employees instant access to the Internet and the ability to download files faster, all while keeping phone and fax lines open."
