Virtual Private Networks Are Gaining Importance For Corporate Communications

By Nick Mitsis | February 1, 2006

IP VPN (Internet Protocol Virtual Private Network) via satellite is a distinct application targeted specifically at the large, small and medium enterprise (SME), and small office/home office (SoHo) sectors. A number of satellite operators, as well as terrestrial IP VPN players, currently are implementing IP VPN via satellite solutions in order to facilitate stronger solutions for the corporate customer.
In recent months, IP VPN via satellite has become a hot topic among end users and service providers alike. Enterprises that manage their private line and frame relay data networks are starting a major transition to IP VPNs managed by service providers. Corporations look for these managed IP VPNs to reduce IT budgets and support resources, particularly at their smaller remote sites and branch offices. There are satellite service providers in the market that offer such turnkey solutions, elevating the operational burden from the customer.
However, as in any new application and emerging market, the viability and actual need for such services have to be ascertained. For example, medium to large enterprises need to examine the regions where they have offices and do business to determine their IP VPN needs before committing to such systems. Currently, there are satellite service providers that have partnered with a select number of national and international satellite hub operators and value-added service and solution providers to present a truly managed commercial-grade network service. A service designed for businesses that are multi-location or require reliable high-speed connections; or both.
According to recent reports, 95 percent of managed IP VPN revenue is derived from data networks, but that number is estimated to grow as converged networks capable of supporting voice and video in addition to data become more mainstream.
As corporate executives examine their near-term projected business expansion, advanced VPN systems will increase in importance. Seamless, secure connection with remote offices must be achieved in an effort to maintain a competitive edge. An IP VPN via satellite solution, managed through the satellite service provider can be the most efficient way to go.
